Base Rate of Banks - FAQ

What is Base Rate ?

It is the Benchmark lending rate of a Bank below which it cannot lend except cases permitted / allowed by RBI. There can be only one Base Rate for each bank at a time. For more on Bank Base Rate, Click here.

When was Base Rate introduced ?

Base Rate was introduced with effect from July, 2010 and is a replacement of earlier BPLR system which was in prevalence since 2003.

At what interval, a Base Rate is supposed to be reviewed ?
Base Rate is to be reviewed at least once in every quarter.
Which are the loans in respect of which Banks can lend below Base Rate ?

Following loans are normally priced below the Base Rate--

* Loans against Bank's Own Deposits

* DRI Advance

* Loans to Bank's own employees / retired employees

* Interest rates on Restructured / Compromise / OTS accounts or WCTL / FITL loans as per Bank's internal guidelines or on basis of viability of repayment.

* Lending to Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) for short term where Refinance is available from NABARD.

* Lending under Micro-Credit Scheme of National Scheduled Tribes Finance & Development Corporation (NSTFDC) and National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation (NHFDC) to the extent of refinance available.

* Financing of off-grid & decentralized solar applications under Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) where subsidy/refinance is available.
